• For the WordPress Credits program, I decided to contribute to the WooCommerce project by translating content into Spanish (Costa Rica). My contribution is part of the WordPress translation community, also known as Polyglots, which helps make WordPress and its related projects accessible to people in different languages.

    Why I chose this team

I chose WooCommerce because it was recommended by my professor, and I was interested in learning more about how an important WordPress project works. WooCommerce is used to create online stores, so its content needs to be clear and easy to understand for people who want to sell products or manage a store online.

I also liked the idea of contributing in Spanish (Costa Rica). Even though Spanish is spoken in many countries, some words and expressions can be different depending on the region. I think it is important for users in Costa Rica to find translations that sound natural and are easy to understand.

    My contribution project

My project will focus on translating WooCommerce strings into Spanish (Costa Rica). This means reviewing the original text in English and suggesting translations that communicate the same meaning in a clear and natural way.

I will pay attention to the context of each string, the terminology used in online stores, and whether the translation makes sense for users in Costa Rica. I understand that translation is not just about changing words from one language to another. It also involves making the content understandable and useful for the people who will use it.

How this relates to my skills and interests

As an Information Systems Engineering student, I have experience with technology, software, and web development through my university projects. This background can help me understand the purpose of WooCommerce and the context in which its strings appear.

I am also interested in learning how open-source projects are developed and maintained by people from different places. I enjoy learning new things, researching when I do not understand something, and paying attention to details. I believe these skills will help me review translations carefully and improve them over time.

    What I hope to learn

During this program, I hope to learn how the WordPress translation process works, how contributors collaborate, and how translation suggestions are reviewed. I would also like to become more familiar with the tools used by the Polyglots team and learn how to follow translation guidelines and terminology.

Another goal is to improve my English comprehension and my ability to write clear, natural Spanish for a technical product.

    What I hope to achieve

By the end of the program, I hope to have contributed useful and accurate translations to WooCommerce in Spanish (Costa Rica). I would like to see some of my translation suggestions reviewed and accepted, and to understand the contribution process better.

Most importantly, I hope this experience helps me become more confident in contributing to an open-source project. I am excited to learn from the WordPress community and to know that my work can help make WooCommerce easier to use for Spanish-speaking users in Costa Rica.

  • I created my personal website during class by following the instructions provided. I chose a theme that I liked and started setting up my website using WordPress.

The process helped me understand how to create and customize a website, including how to work with pages and the site’s design. I also learned that WordPress offers different themes and options to personalize a website.

I think having a personal website will be useful throughout the WordPress Credits program because I can share my weekly updates, experiences, and what I learn along the way. I’m looking forward to continuing to improve my website as I gain more experience with WordPress.
